Sassnitz har- bour city is the northernmost city in Germany, from here it takes you just about 100 kilometres to go to Sweden. Above all, it is situated directly by the National Park. After 1860, guests came from all over the world to the fashionable seaside resort, among them were many celebrities. They mostly took accommodation in “Old- Sassnitz”. The old town with its beautiful pension houses and magnificent villas displays the typical seaside resort architecture. It is characterized by cobbled streets, flights of stairs, pretty gables and charming gardens. Its atmosphere is dominated by artist’s studios and galle- ries, cafés and restaurants. In Sassnitz there is hilly land with up to 130 metres high vantage points above the for- mer chalk quarries. Below there is Sassnitz main road with a shopping street and many restaurants. A suspen- ded pedestrian bridge swings down to the harbour from a generous square. A promenade by the sea connects the former ferry pier in the West to the bustling city har- bour in the East and to the old town. Just behind the last houses, Jasmund National Park begins with chalk cliffs and a wooded cliff path. Since 2011 the ancient beech forests belong to “UNESCO World Heritage” Sassnitz Harbour City Wanderlust and fish-sandwiches in the idyllic City Harbour There is a true maritime and postcard-like mood in Sassnitz city harbour. Blue and green are the inco- ming boats, the crew is bearded, rough and friendly. The trawler moor further to the West, here is the mee- ting point of the coastal fishermen with a small catch. Sometimes they sell it directly from the cutter or they supply the local fish market. Especially families with children enjoy the maritime climate full of exciting new experiences. There are attractive cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops along the seaside promenade. Many for- mer fishing trawlers were converted to “trading ships” and nowadays offer delicious smoked fish and marina- des. You may go on a trip to the chalk cliffs, to Cape Arkona or the seaside resorts from Sassnitz with pretty excursion boats. The tourist information is located in a service building at the marvellous outer mole. You find information and personal advice on your travel plan there, but it also offers exhibitions of regional arts and craft. On a stroll from the old town to the city harbour you pass the wind promenade by the sea and an adven- ture playground, but also cafés with a sun terrace and down-to-earth fish restaurants. Sassnitz City Harbour – Maritime in every aspect Nowhere on Rügen the feeling that Germany’s largest island is surrounded by water is so intense as in Sassnitz city harbour. The lively place with shipping companies, suppliers, cruising boats, souvenir shops and cafés is an attractive holiday destination for all Rügen travellers. Here they meet real fishermen, watch trawlers coming in and the seagulls on the mole, while large pots take off to other Baltic harbour cities from the nearby Mukran Port. Sassnitz city harbour is a place to work for many islanders and just because of this so exciting for visitors. A stroll along the promenade or to the little lighthouse on the outer mole raises the lust to travel. Big ships are berthed at the pier, smaller ones with just three men on board in the old harbour. In 2012 more than 90 berths were set up along a floating landing stage. They are suitable for boats of every size and especially reserved for guests. For visitors from the seaside it has become much more comfortable now to visit Sassnitz, because the service area is located in the immediate neighbour- hood of the jetty. The Sassnitz fleet consisted of up to 180 fishing boats at times, setting off to the North Sea, the Baltic and also to worldwide seas. “Sassnitz Museum of Fishing and Harbour” tells about the history and also shows a 26m cutter “Havel”, berthed opposite the museum at the pier. It is the last of 50 ships of this class used in former times until 1990 and to be explored by a guided tour. KÖNIGSSTUHL Visitors’ Centre A day in the adventure world of chalkcliffs Wild, densely wooded and mysterious is the scenery of Jasmund National Park with its ancient beech forests. On 2000 m² of exhibition space over four floors and a 28,000 m² outdoor area the KÖNIGSSTUHL Visitors’ Centre presents this unique sanctuary. The exhibition follows 19 stations at which visitors experience natu- ral phenomena by touch and trial and are supported by multimedia features. They discover the mysterious world of the National Park with audio guides as an adventurer, an explorer or on the trail of romanticism. A special audio programme was launched for children with mouse Mimi and raven Krax. The famous chalk cliff “Königsstuhl” (king chair) is accessible via a platform close to the visitors’ centre. Since 2011, parts of the beech forests in Jasmund National Park are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The documentary film “The Migration of the Ancient Beech Forests” is the new highlight of the exhibition. Unusual special effects, amazing images and the 180° projection of the multi-vision cinema with four screens, make the film a rousing experience. Knowledge around the National Park is imparted by short tours and walks. Those arriving by bus can get off directly on KÖNIGSSTUHL Visitors’ Centre. All exhibits are wheel- chair accessible. Sports and leisure on Jasmund Hiking and biking are the classic activities on Jasmund. Doing this visitors discover the most beautiful Bodden scenery as well as the national park. A new cycle path opened in 2019 leads from Sassnitz through the Stubnitz Forest to the Königsstuhl. From there there is a connec- ting cycle path in the direction of Lohme, Glowe and Sagard. But there are many other opportunities to be active during the holidays. The thermal spa in Neddesitz offers an 80 m chute, a 34° C pool for children, a warm indoor pool with bubble beds, a wild water canal and an outdoor pool. There is another swimming pool and sauna area at Sassnitz “Rügenhotel”. In Sassnitz com- mercial area there is a bowling lane with six alleys being lighted at night. At parts of the Baltic Sea beaches you can surf and kite. Jasmund chalk cliff never looks so beautiful as seen from the sea. Holiday cruisers drive close by the coast and therefore passengers get a good view of the high cliff woods in Jasmund national park. Enjoying the sunshine, a slight swell and the fresh Baltic Sea breeze we pass the 9 km long chalk coast with its legendary ravines, sights and secrets. When we finally reach “Königsstuhl” we already learned a lot about this mythical world. Game fishers are immediately out on the open sea from Sassnitz. That is why they love to come here, to catch cod but also some salmon. And water sports? Sailors find many guest berths at Jasmund marinas and an enticing sailing area, as well as plenty opportunities for surfing in the sea or at the shallow Bodden waters. 34 35
